Shocking Stats About Getting Old

  • Less than one in a thousand people pay and federal estate tax (aka “death tax”), when they die.
  • One time, less then one in 10 managed investment funds perform as well as an index fund.  That means if you follow the advice of these experts 90% of the time you will do worse then if your simply put your money in an index fund.
  • For people over 65, women are twice as likely to live in poverty than men, and 50% more likely to be disabled.
  • About 1 in 4 women over 60 take antidepressant mediations.
  • Ten percent of Americans over age 65 have Alzheimer’s disease.  This increased to 33 percent among people ages 85 and over.  Two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
  • Unpaid family members and friend provide 83 percent of all long-term care in America, and two0thirds of older adults rely exclusively on free care.
  • Sixty-Five percent of unpaid long-term caregiver are female, and 25 percent of them are in the “sandwich generation,” meaning they provide care for their aging parents, as well as their children.
